Detroit is Michigan’s largest city and is located in the southeastern part of the state. The city of Detroit has had a profound impact on history, and on the world – from the invention of the automobile to the Motown sound – Detroit has crafted American culture. This 303-year old city has top-notch sports facilities, family attractions, glitzy casinos and world class museums. Detroit is a fun city that surprises a lot of people with its’ many “firsts,” such as, it installed the first mile of paved road, just north of the Model T Plant in 1909, and also installed the first traffic light in 1915 in downtown Detroit. The city also built the first urban freeway, the Davison, in 1942 and is home to the oldest state fair in the nation, first held in 1849. Detroit shares the world’s first auto traffic tunnel between two countries – the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel, is home to the world’s only floating post office, found on the Detroit River, and features the nation’s oldest freshwater aquarium, located on Belle Isle Park. This fascinating city is full of educational, cultural and historical places of interest to all age groups.

With a population of 951,000 and growing, Detroit is the 10th largest city in the United States. It is internationally known as “the automobile manufacturing capital of the world,” and was the home of Henry Ford, who built his first car here in 1896. Since then, the city of Detroit has experienced phenomenal growth and is now engaged in one of urban America’s greatest revitalization efforts. One of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, Far East, is undergoing a transformation of historic proportions and the Mayor says “the fundamental thing here is, we are not just building houses, we’re building a community. We envision a mix of retail, housing, churches, recreational facilities, public spaces and perhaps even schools. We want a complete neighborhood. It also will stress mixed income. We picture a range of housing options from market rate to affordable and mixed use in terms of townhouses, attached units, rentals for sale, all of the highest quality. We expect between 3,000 and 4,000 new or renovated homes will be located in this area with the first models to be up in early 2005.”

The rest of Detroit’s neighborhoods are undergoing a housing boom, as well. Development continues in Brush Park and Merchants Row, and the renovation continues of the Kales Building in Grand Circus Park. Thousands of new housing developments have gone up in Detroit since 1994, including single-family homes, apartments and townhouses, condominiums, duplexes, and lofts. A wide variety of housing options are available in the city, including several developments for low-to-moderate income residents and seniors. Detroit’s business community is also on the rise, with small businesses, which are the economic foundation of the community, continuing to grow in number at an impressive rate. New coffeehouses, boutiques, restaurants, and retail stores line the streets, also creating new jobs and helping to stabilize the city.
